Description
One day, traveling down the Mozambique Channel on the way to the port of Durban, South Africa; our ship was surrounded by birds. The mates called them Boobies, but on closer inspection they seemed to be Cape Gannets. You can tell by their distinctive golden head and neck feathers.
The Cape Gannets would soar up by the bridge wings and watch for flying fish soaring out from the wake of the ship. Once the birds spotted some flying fish, they would dive down and try to catch the fish mid-flight. They were very skilled at catching fish in the air and in the water. You could tell this indirectly, because by the end of the day the deck was covered in bird droppings.
