Pico de Orizaba is a dormant stratovolcano in Mexico. It stands 18,491 feet high (5,636 meters), is the highest peak in Mexico, and the highest volcano in North America. On a clear day, Orizaba can even be seen by the ships coming from the Gulf of Mexico into the port of Veracruz, about 75 miles away. This image is taken from a ship in the port of Veracruz on a clear autumn morning. It was impressive because normally only the surrounding city can be seen and everything in the distance is lost in haze. On this particular day, this impressive volcano was towering over the surrounding landscape. You knew by looking at it that it was very far away, but also that it was huge. (October 20201)
