Description
Originally, the plan was to climb to Baiyun mountain top and capture an image of the rising sun illuminating the waterfall of Xiazhang Village. When my dog, Xiao Bao, and I left the house at 3AM, it was cloudy, which was not a good sign. I figured, we had already got up and gathered all the equipment, so we'll just ride over and see if the weather breaks. On the ride over it got foggy, another bad sign...
We arrived at the base of the mountain we had to clim,b and it was foggy and I assumed overcast. I planned to cancel the shoot, and just ride on up the road to see what the conditions were in the village. On the way up the mountain, we rose up out of the fog and there was a clear starry sky. OK, the shoot was back on. We raced back down and started hiking up.
After a long slog up the mountain we found our spot overlooking the village but, the village, waterfall, and whole valley were submerged in a river of clouds. The sky was starting to turn blue where the sun would rise so we set up the tripod, etc and started capturing images. I was hoping for the fog/clouds to rise up and dissipate, so I could get the waterfall shot, but it didn't work out that way. The cloud river did rise, but then just covered everything in opaque fog.
After returning from our trip, I studied the captured images and this one really struck me as something special. The smooth color transistions coming from the rising sun, smooth flowing cloud river, and sharp black silhouettes of the vegetation on the mountain really impressed upon me the beauty of nature.
