Description
Starting on May 3, 2018 Kilauea volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii erupted. More than 20 fissures opened up in Leilani Estates subdivision. By July, the amount of lava gushing from the fissures was estimated to be a steady 26,000 US gallons per second.
The lava heading south reached the sea and sent huge plumes of steam and laze into the air. Some of the lava spills from the surface of the flow into the sea, and some flows into the sea from lava tubes hidden underground. Sometimes when the lava enters the sea it explodes violently and you get what you see here. (July 2018)
